Operational and Customer Service Overview

Last updated on April 18, 2024
Operations Team, North America

"Keeping our customers proactively informed helps them with their cargo planning and minimises uncertainty that could disrupt their supply chain. Our operational updates for North America are aimed at offering more transparency and improving the information flow for our customers to better manage and oversee the movement of their cargo."

Baltimore Situation: Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by the tragic incident at the Francis Scott Key Bridge. With the current situation, we are expecting to omit Baltimore in the foreseeable future and are working on alternatives to minimize the impact on your supply chain. In line with this, all bookings to/from Baltimore are suspended until further notice. The channel's restoration to its earlier functionality is anticipated by the end of May 2024. Our contingency plan can be found in the "Here's the latest information concerning Baltimore" section of this page.

Suez Canal & Red Sea situation: Many of our ships are impacted by the Cape of Good Hope routing, leading to extended transit times. This situation has had an adverse impact on our reefer equipment flows. Consequently, we must announce the implementation of reefer booking limitations from New York, Philadelphia, and Norfolk to worldwide destinations, effective March 1, 2024. Additionally, there will be restrictions on all reefer movement to/via Jebel Ali/Jeddah, until further notice. We will keep you updated on the status of individual vessels and services for North America through our Live-Ticker. Please ensure bookmarking this article. Please also visit our FAQ for further information.

Panama Canal update - The lower-than-usual water levels in the Gatun Lake are causing severe draft restrictions on vessels transiting the Panama Canal. This has caused a backlog of traffic waiting to pass through. We are monitoring the journeys of our vessels and are pleased to share a live vessel tracker to assist with your cargo planning.

Here's the latest information concerning Baltimore

***Update April 5, 2024

Temporary service between New York and Baltimore

As the regrettable Baltimore bridge collapse continues to impact supply chains, a temporary intermodal service between Elizabeth Marine Terminal (EMT) and Seagirt Marine Terminal has been established. This new service will be available from April 5, 2024, and will operate five (5) days per week in each direction.

For import containers:
Please pick up import units at the Seagirt Marine Terminal

For export containers:
Please drop off export units at the Seagirt Marine Terminal

For additional details such as cut-offs, please refer to the Norfolk Southern website here.

***Update April 4, 2024

The channel's restoration to its earlier functionality is anticipated by the end of May 2024.

***Update March 28, 2024

While there were no Hapag-Lloyd containers on the vessel involved in the collision, we recognize that this incident will still have repercussions on our customers' cargo planning. Therefore, the following contingency plan in compliance with Bill of Lading clause No. 18 "Matters Affecting Performance," will be implemented:

For import containers to Baltimore:

  • Containers on water: All containers booked for a Baltimore discharge will be re-routed for discharge in New York. Containers can be collected in New York or, if requested, moved to Baltimore by Hapag-Lloyd with costs associated with on-carriage for account of the cargo owner. Please contact your local Customer Service representative for guidance on your individual situation. No Change of Destination (COD) / Admin fee will be charged for changes.
  • Containers not loaded at origin (gated-in/not gated-in): Please get in touch with our origin office to explore alternate routing options.
  • Booking suspension: Given the uncertainty of the duration of the port closure, we will not accept any new bookings to Baltimore until further notice. Alternate discharge ports should be discussed with your Sales/Customer Service representatives.

For export containers from Baltimore:

  • Containers on the terminal: Until port re-opening, containers will remain at the terminal unless we receive your written notification that you prefer an alternate load port option, for account of the cargo owner. If you prefer to return the container to your facility for de-stuffing, please discuss this with your Customer Service representative. No COD / Admin fee will be charged for changes.
  • Containers gated-out empty, but not yet loaded: The Baltimore terminal has stopped receiving exports until further notice. If you prefer to utilize the container for an alternative destination, please contact your Customer Service representative. No COD / Admin fee will be charged for changes.
  • Containers at customer facility already loaded: The Baltimore terminal has stopped receiving exports until further notice. Full containers can be delivered to New York directly or, if requested, moved to an alternattive Port of Loading by Hapag-Lloyd with costs associated with pre-carriage for account of the cargo owner. Please contact your local Customer Service representative for guidance on your individual situation.
  • Bookings without any activity: Will be cancelled and the respecitve notifications will be sent. Kindly place new bookings via alternative routings.
  • Booking suspension: Given the uncertainty of the duration of the port closure, we will not accept any new bookings from Baltimore until further notice. Please discuss the options for alternative load ports with your Sales/Customer Service representatives.

For barge service between Baltimore and Norfolk / Philadelphia:

  • Barge services in/out of the Port of Baltimore have been suspended until further notice.
  • Imports: Containers can be collected from either Norfolk or Philadelphia.
  • Exports: If requested, containers can be moved to Norfolk or Philadelphia.
  • In both scenarios, no COD / Admin fee will be charged for changes.
  • If requested, containers can be moved to/from Baltimore by Hapag-Lloyd with costs associated with on-carriage/pre-carriage for account of the cargo owner. Please contact your local Customer Service representative for guidance on your individual situation.

***Update March 27, 2024

As you might have seen in the news, the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed on the early hours of March 26, 2024, after it was hit by a container vessel. This regretful incident has halted the Port of Baltimore’s vessel traffic, a situation that will continue until further notice, and might therefore affect your cargo planning.

With the current situation, we are expecting to omit Baltimore in the foreseeable future and are working on alternatives to minimize the impact on your supply chain. Our services calling the port of Baltimore; mainly the A-Service (ATA) and the Americas Service (USW), present alternatives for import and export cargo through the ports of New York and Norfolk. These options will be considered depending on your preference and service configuration, and our local teams are preparing more detailed information to assist you, including guidance for full gated-in containers, empty containers positioned to your premises and other operational details.

Our thoughts are with those who have been affected, and we will continue to share updates as soon as they are made available. Therefore, we would like to encourage you to bookmark this page for further updates.

If you have questions concerning the above disruption, please contact our customer service team at your location, who will guide you based on your individual situation.

Here’s an update on rail routes for Hapag-Lloyd shipments

We would like to inform you about upcoming changes to the rail routes for Hapag-Lloyd shipments in the United States, which may impact your deliveries. Unfortunately, our partners at Norfolk Southern have decided to close certain options for rail routes, with these adjustments taking effect from February 19, 2024. Please be aware of the following changes:

Birmingham to/from Savannah & Charleston:
We have signed contracts with the CSX rail line, reopening the lane for Savannah to/from Birmingham. The CSX rail line extends to Bessemer, AL, which is just 20 minutes from Birmingham.

New Orleans to/from Savannah & Charleston:
Contracts with the CSX rail line have allowed us to reopen the lane for Savannah to/from New Orleans. Currently, there is no alternative for Charleston.

Greensboro to/from Norfolk:
Unfortunately, we do not have an alternative rail route for this option. We recommend Carrier Haulage as the alternative.

Louisville, Chicago, Cincinnati to/from Savannah & Charleston:
Shipments to these inland locations will now go through the port of Norfolk and New York. There are no alternative routes via Savannah or Charleston.

Memphis, Atlanta, to/from Jacksonville:
We do not have an alternative rail route for this option. Carrier Haulage is recommended as the alternative.

All the above rail routes are currently in effect, and we are not accepting new bookings until further notice. We understand the importance of a smooth and reliable transportation experience for your shipments. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience these changes may cause. Rest assured, we are fully committed to identifying suitable alternatives and will keep you informed of any further developments.
